British Values
At St Dunstan’s we want all children to flourish in their lives and part of this is learning about and sharing the school values with each other and with our families and community.
Everyone is committed to the values espoused within the Gospels. As modern British values have evolved from a time when we were historically Christian, our Gospel values and British values are fundamentally the same. We believe God asks us to show love to all. Love can be shown through demonstrating and supporting the British values for ourselves and those we live alongside.
Through the teaching of our curriculum, we believe in and promote core British values including democracy, respect, tolerance, acceptance, peace, being non-judgmental, humility, justice, the rule of the law, the dignity of each human being and individual liberty, forgiveness, generosity, fairness, discipline and hope.
School Values
We believe the school’s Christian values link closely to the British values:
Love – tolerance of others, rule of law
Trust – mutual respect
Hope – individual liberty
Serve – democracy
Democracy
The PSHE Curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about the importance of democratic processes and decision-making.
They can explore different forms of democracy, such as voting and representation, and how these processes promote equality and fairness.
Teachers encourage children to participate in class discussions and decision-making and to understand the importance of listening to and respecting the views of others.
At St. Dunstan’s, children’s opinions are taken into account when selecting House Captains and School Councillors, they are consulted on which charities they would like to support throughout the year, they vote for winners of competitions, where relevant, and the School Council have opportunities to read and make comments on new policies and initiatives for the school and are constantly discussing how to make their school the best place it can be.
Rule of Law
The PSHE Curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about the laws and regulations that govern society and how they help to maintain order and protect individuals.
Children at St. Dunstan’s learn about the importance of following rules and laws and how breaking them can have consequences. The children create their own Class Charter, linked to our Christian values, each year and all sign the charter.
Teachers promote this value by encouraging children to understand and follow rules and laws and by highlighting the importance of respect for authority and the role of the justice system. Problem Solving sheets are used at St. Dunstan’s to allow children to distinguish between right and wrong and reflect on behaviour.
Individual Liberty
The PSHE Curriculum emphasises the importance of personal expression and respect for others.
Children learn about the importance of respecting the rights and freedoms of others and how to express their own views and opinions in a respectful and constructive manner.
Teachers encourage children to develop a sense of self-awareness and to understand the importance of personal autonomy and self-expression. Children at St. Dunstan’s have opportunities to have key roles within the school (house captains, school councillors, junior supremos, members of the children’s faith group) and they are actively encouraged to have their own opinions and make their own decisions.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
The PSHE, RE and wider curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about and appreciate the diversity of society, including different cultures, beliefs, and identities.
Children learn about the importance of respect for others, regardless of their differences and how to promote equality and fairness in their daily lives. Teachers promote mutual respect by encouraging children to understand and appreciate the perspectives of others, and by creating an inclusive and supportive classroom environment.
The PSHE, RE and wider curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about different cultures and religions and to develop empathy and understanding for those with different beliefs and values.
Children at St. Dunstan’s learn about the importance of tolerance and respect for diversity, and how to challenge prejudice and discrimination. Teachers promote this value by incorporating activities and resources that highlight different cultural practices and beliefs, and by encouraging children to engage with and learn from others with different backgrounds and perspectives.
